Horses have always been a passion of mine, and drawing them is among my earliest childhood memories. I was never able to have a horse of my own, so looking through horse books and drawing pictures of horses was as close to them as I could get. I grew up in Mayfield Village, Ohio, with my parents and sister, Amber. During my school years, I took as many art classes as I could. I won multiple awards in school-related art competitions, and my art teacher encouraged me to continue developing my artistic skills.
The summer before my senior year, I began two years of study under portrait artist Bill Kufahl. Under his guidance, I learned how to excel in charcoal, pastel, and oil painting. Just after turning eighteen, I entered my first charcoal drawing in a local art show, where I won second place.
Since then my artwork has been exhibited at many equine events. I have had the opportunity to do commissioned work, and in 2008, I entered the AAEA Fall Open Juried Exhibition in Kentucky, where two of my pieces were accepted. This was an exciting opportunity. My drawing Jake the Gypsy Horse won the Founder’s Award, and my painting A Hundred and Ten Percent won the Popular Choice award. My work was also exhibited in the “Pulling Their Weight” exhibition at Mackinac Island.
As an equine artist, I strive to capture the beauty, power and personality of each horse. My artwork is extremely detailed and very realistic, and much of it is inspired by horses that I’ve seen on trips to Lexington Kentucky and Assateague Island. These have become two of my favorite places, and I have really fallen in love with the horses there. I truly enjoy capturing horses of all kinds in my art. Whether I’m portraying a champion Thoroughbred racehorse or a wild pony of Assateague, I hope that my art causes you to stop and appreciate them as a beautiful part of God’s creation.
